Collection: The New Lantern
Here is a set of pictures taken in South Africa, in Johannesburg and Parys in the Free State. The images reflect the everyday lives of the family I was staying with. My hosts became my subjects and their home became my studio.
The project was shot in 2009 and was a personal project representing a new beginning. It was my first visit to South Africa but it all seemed strangely familiar. The result was a hybrid of ideas of all that had come before reflecting on my 'Ordinary Places' and 'A View of the Fens from the Car with Wings' series. A few of the images in this set are in my bestsellers list, it has been amazing connecting with people around the world who appreciate this work.
I found the place one of the most beautiful places in the world, but there are a few caveats, this is a fractured landscape, where and life and death feel very interwoven into the fabric of the country and that is represented in the pictures.
